Veolia, through its Flexcity offer, optimises Amsterdam's largest Battery Storage

Veolia, through its Flexcity offer, is pioneering battery energy storage optimisation in Amsterdam with the appointment to optimise Giraffe - Amsterdam's largest battery energy storage system (BESS). Effective May 1, 2026, Veolia and enspired have taken over the commercial optimisation of this 10 MW, 47 MWh lithium-ion battery storage facility under a merchant profit-sharing arrangement.

What makes Giraffe special?

Inaugurated in October 2025, the Giraffe BESS is located in Amsterdam's Westhaven and consists of 12 Tesla Megapack 2XL units. With a power capacity of 10 MW and energy storage capacity of 47 MWh (four-hour duration), Giraffe is Amsterdam's largest battery energy storage project. The installation delivers grid balancing services and enhances energy supply reliability in the Amsterdam port area.

Cross-Market Optimisation Strategy

Veolia, with its Flexcity Offer and enspired bring a fully integrated cross-market optimisation approach to Giraffe, combining expertise across:

  • Wholesale markets (intraday, day-ahead, imbalance trading)
  • Ancillary services (aFRR capacity and energy)
  • Congestion management services

The merchant profit-sharing structure aligns incentives directly between GIGA Storage and its optimisation partners, ensuring superior dispatch performance translates into shared benefits for all parties.
