aFRR (standing for Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve) is the second Italian electric reserve. These reserves - 3 in number - are implemented by the TSO, Terna, to balance the power grid.
aFRR is developed within the pilot project UVAM (Virtual Mixed Aggregated Unit) led by Terna in order to open its electric reserves to different assets and actors, according to European regulation and real needs. This service is going to open soon in 2022.
Who can participate?
An asset which consumes or produces electricity.
An asset able to modulate its electric power within 5 minutes.
An asset able to modulate daily its electric power.
How does it work?
You can offer your flexible power each day for the following day. Different ways exist to participate in aFRR depending on whether you are a consumer or a producer.
An electric producer will have to increase its production within 5 minutes.
- Illustration of an electric asset producing more electricity to support the grid when there is an important lack of electricity.
An electric consumer will have to reduce its consumption within 5 minutes.
- Illustration of an electric asset consuming less power to lighten the grid when there is an important lack of electricity.
Flexcity remunerates you for really delivering power to the power grid (activation remuneration).
