Discover aFRR service in Belgium

aFRR (standing for "Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve") is the secondary Belgian electric reserve. These reserves - 3 in number - are implemented by the TSO, Elia, to balance its power grid.

After FCR, aFRR is used to restore automatically the frequency of the power grid. This service enables Elia to solve small daily imbalances.

Flexcity was the first independent aggregator to propose the electric flexibility of its partners in this service (opened at the end of 2020 for independent aggregators).

Who can participate?

1.

An asset PRODUCING OR CONSUMING ELECTRICITY.

2.

An asset able to MODULATE ITS ELECTRIC POWER BY FOLLOWIING A LINEAR SIGNAL.

3.

An asset able to DAILY MODULATE ITS ELECTRIC POWER.

How does it work?

All assets answering positively to the above mentioned requirements can participate in this service through different ways:

An asset producing electricity will have to increase its production (aFRR UP) and/or decrease its production (aFRR DOWN) within 7,5 minutes while following a linear signal sent each 4 seconds.

- Example of an asset producing less electricity (aFRR DOWN)

An asset consuming electricity will have to increase its consumption (aFRR DOWN) and/or decrease its consumption (aFRR UP) within 7,5 minutes while following a linear signal sent each 4 seconds.

Example of an asset consuming more electricity (aFRR DOWN) -

Your remuneration

Flexcity remunerates you for making your flexible power available to the grid (availability remuneration) and the real modulation of this flexible power (activation remuneration).

In 2021, a flexible asset always available could have generated up to  420 000€/MW in aFRR UP and 690 000€/MW in aFRR DOWN of availability remuneration according to market prices.

You want to estimate your aFRR potential remuneration?
